Buying an SSD right now is painful, and yet you may need to. If that’s for a laptop drive upgrade, or for anywhere a SATA III SSD is required, there’s a sleepy blink of brighter news. Samsung’s much-loved EVO 870 1TB drive has fallen fast in a new Amazon deal. The drive, once as low as $49 and priced as high as $519 in May, has fallen sharply. The current cost is $250. That’s a $100 drop from its last price and, while still incredibly high, is the lowest since April.

Why we like the Samsung 870 EVO 1TB

High-quality SSD

A highly popular and well-liked SATA III SSD, the Samsung 870 EVO is one of those drives that older systems and laptops can rely on. It’s got a 4.8-out-of-5 star rating on Amazon, and users love its staying power, stability, and no-fuss usability. It’s a solid option for a new boot drive or an extra hit of space, even if its current price is less than great.

SATA III Speedy

SATA III SSDs cannot match NVMe speeds. Still, the 870 EVO can pretty much max out the SATA III interface with read speeds up to 560MB/s and write speeds up to 530MB/s. That’s a decent bump on some older laptops’ drives. And if you’re still holding onto HDDs, then you’ll see an easy jump in performance.

Solidly durable

The Samsung 870 EVO has a 600TBW and a 5-year limited warranty. The 600TBW means it should withstand 600TBs written to it daily for 1.64 years before showing errors. But who writes 600TBs to a drive daily? If you write 20GB per day, the drive would theoretically go 80 years before showing errors. Not shabby at all.

What to consider before you buy

The price. That’s it. SSD costs are still wildly inflated, but if you do need to buy a SATA III SSD right now, then this looks to be the best Amazon deal as we write. Even the 500GB variant of this drive costs the same price as the 1TB, showing just how bad things are. That this drive has dropped $100, but is still $200 above its lowest ever, speaks volumes. Still, this is a better direction of travel, and the drive should serve with ease for years to come.
