The Samsung 990 2TB approaches the practical bandwidth limit of PCIe 4.0 with sequential speeds rated at up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,450MB/s write. Its DRAM-less design, Host Memory Buffer support and 800TB endurance rating make it suitable for gaming libraries, general PC upgrades and everyday creative work. It is less compelling for sustained professional writes, however, it’s a great way of getting fast storage at a (relatively) reasonable cost in this time of global shortage and sky high asking prices. Grab it now for $329.99.

The drive uses the common M.2 2280 form factor, meaning it measures approximately 22mm wide and 80mm long. Its PCIe 4.0×4 interface communicates through NVMe 2.0 and remains backward compatible with older M.2 NVMe slots. Installing it in a PCIe 3.0 system will reduce peak transfer speed to the older interface’s lower ceiling. What we like about the Samsung 990 2TB NVMe SSD

Near-maximum PCIe 4.0 read performance

A rated 7,250MB/s sequential read speed places the 990 near the practical upper range of a PCIe 4.0×4 connection. This makes it suitable for moving large video assets, installing or updating substantial games and handling other bandwidth-intensive transfers. It should also support Microsoft DirectStorage workloads where compatible games, Windows versions and graphics hardware are used. DirectStorage can transfer compressed assets more efficiently from an NVMe drive, although software support and the complete system configuration determine the real benefit.

Game-loading differences between fast NVMe drives are often much smaller than their headline bandwidth figures suggest. Moving from a hard drive or SATA SSD creates the largest improvement. Upgrading from another competent PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive may save only a limited amount of time in many games.

Strong random write specification

The claimed maximum of 1.2 million random write IOPS is notable for a mainstream, DRAM-less product. Random performance contributes to responsiveness when the system handles application data, temporary files and several operations simultaneously.

Maximum IOPS figures are normally measured at queue depths much higher than ordinary desktop software generates. Low-queue-depth latency remains more representative of everyday responsiveness, and the difference between modern NVMe drives can be difficult to perceive without controlled testing.

Useful 2TB capacity

Two terabytes provides enough space for Windows, applications and a substantial game collection. It is also practical for photographs, 4K video projects and active document archives. Formatted capacity displayed by Windows will be lower because manufacturers use decimal gigabytes while the operating system may report capacity using binary units. The capacity also provides more room for Samsung’s dynamic write cache and internal maintenance than a nearly full smaller drive. Maintaining some free space can improve sustained behaviour and give the controller sufficient working area for garbage collection and wear levelling.

Good power efficiency

Samsung claims up to 38% better performance per watt than the 990 PRO under its selected testing. The 2TB drive is listed at approximately 4.3W during average reads and 3.8W during average writes, with much lower consumption in supported idle states. Efficiency is particularly relevant in notebooks and compact desktops, where heat and battery drain matter. The drive can still become warm during prolonged transfers, so a motherboard M.2 heat spreader is advisable when one is available.

The 38% figure refers to performance relative to power consumption rather than a 38% reduction in electricity use under every workload. The 990 PRO may complete certain tasks faster despite consuming more power, making direct comparisons dependent on the application.

Samsung Magician support

Samsung Magician provides firmware updating, health monitoring, diagnostic scans, performance testing, secure erase functions and drive information. Keeping SSD firmware current is important because updates can address compatibility, reliability or performance issues. An internet connection may be necessary for software authentication and update retrieval, but it is not required for ordinary SSD operation. Amazon’s product description could misleadingly suggest otherwise.

Hardware encryption support includes AES 256-bit functionality, TCG/Opal 2.0 and Microsoft eDrive compatibility. Encryption still requires correct operating-system and firmware configuration; merely installing the SSD does not automatically protect stored information.

Reasonable write endurance

The 2TB version is rated for 800 terabytes written. That represents an average of roughly 730GB written every day across a three-year period, far beyond ordinary home use. Most gaming and general productivity systems are unlikely to approach this limit.

Heavy scratch-disk use, continuous video capture, large database activity or write-intensive workstation workloads can consume endurance more quickly. Such users may prefer a professional or higher-end TLC drive with a longer warranty and stronger sustained performance.

Who should consider this 2TB SSD deal?

The Samsung 990 2TB is best suited to gamers, mainstream PC builders and laptop owners who want high-end PCIe 4.0 read performance without paying for a Gen 5 drive. It provides ample capacity and should remain responsive during general computing, software development and moderate creative work. It is also a sensible secondary game drive. Its DRAM-less architecture has little effect on most game loading, while the 2TB capacity accommodates a useful library. Builders should confirm that their motherboard offers an M.2 NVMe slot with four PCIe 4.0 lanes if they want the advertised performance.

Professional editors, database users and anyone with sustained write-heavy workloads should consider the 990 PRO or another DRAM-equipped model. The PRO provides faster peak performance, dedicated LPDDR4 cache and a five-year warranty, making it more appropriate when consistency and support matter more than power efficiency.
