From 21 new emojis to crash detection optimization, there’s a lot to get excited about in the new iOS 16.4 update. Let’s explore the new features of iOS 16.4 and how to install the new update.

iOS 16.4 new features

Emojis

Apple is adding 21 new emojis to their emoji keyboard. Expect to see new options like a shaking head, a few new heart colors, animals like a donkey and jellyfish, and so much more.

Web app notifications

Now, websites that you’ve saved to your Home Screen can ask for permission to send push notifications using the Push API, Notifications API, and Service Workers.

Well, just like notifications from your favorite apps, these web push notifications will pop up on your Lock Screen, Notification Center, and even on your Apple Watch.

Improved Home architecture

iOS 16.4 will reintroduce the HomeKit architecture update, which was originally supposed to be on iOS 16.2. This new ‌update promises to improve the reliability and efficiency of communication between your Apple devices and smart home accessories.

Podcasts update

Expect an update to the Podcasts app for iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay. The Library section now offers access to Channels, and Up Next allows you to continue episodes, start new episodes, and skip episodes.

Voice isolation

Apple is offering an improvement to mobile calls. The update prioritizes your voice and blocks out background ambient noise.

iOS 16.4 other enhancements and bug fixes

Alongside the new features above, these are the other enhancements and bug fixes on iOS 16.4.

  • New crash detection optimization for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro
  • Voice-over support for maps in Weather.
  • A new duplicate album to hold duplicate photos and videos in an iCloud Shared Photo Library.
  • Automatic dimming of videos when flashes of light or strobes are detected.
