AMD’s RX 9070 series might challenge Nvidia’s dominance as leaked price target cheaper than 5070 Ti

When it comes to graphics cards for PC gaming, the first thing most people think of is ‘Nvidia'. However, a lot of consumers have started to seriously consider what AMD has to offer instead in light of the ongoing problems with the launch of the Nvidia RTX 50 series. Most recently, that would be missing ROPs hurting performance.
AMD is set to launch its new Radeon RX 9070 series of cards in early March, as confirmed by AMD CEO Lisa Su. These cards or of great interest to many PC gaming customers. Unless you have bottomless pockets, most PC enthusiasts tend to stick to the more affordable mid-range. In Nvidia terms, these tend to be the 60 and 70 suffix cards. AMD has suggested that it is aiming at this part of the consumer market, and not aiming to compete with the high-end market dominated by the RTX 4090 and now the 5090.
How does the 9070 series compare so far?
It is difficult to make any direct comparisons since the RX 9070 series is not out yet, or even officially announced. However, some leaked performance figures do give us some approximate data to work with. According to this leaked information, in AMD's internal testing, the RX 9070 XT was on average 42% faster than the 7900 GRE.
AMD's tests were fairly thorough, testing over 30 games on various resolutions, including Far Cry 6, Cyberpunk 2077, and Black Myth Wukong. The result was a 20% overall improvement at 1440p resolution and a whopping 42% at 4K. If these figures are accurate, then this would put the RX 9070 XT at equivalent or better performance than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti.
Price is the key to success for AMD
The elephant in the room is the price point. Many users have been vocal in their complaints about the MSRP of the RTX 50 series cards. With scalpers buying up much of the limited stock to sell on at inflated prices, this has only made the situation worse. As a result, a lot of PC builders are hoping AMD will provide a solution.
The pricing for the Radeon RX 9070 series has not been confirmed, though some leaks such as one of BestBuy's internal systems show alarmingly high figures. However, AMD has indicated that it is listening to the consumers. During a media briefing leaked by VideoCardz, AMD said that 85% of gamers buy cards below $700, and seemed to indicate that this is the segment that AMD is focused on.
We recently ran a poll that tells us that most PC gamers won’t pay more than $800 for the RTX 5070 Ti, and we expect the same to be true for AMD’s upcoming RX 9070 series – especially if these cards are designed to go head-to-head. With the indication that the XT card will be less than $700, this places the XT at least $50 cheaper than the 5070 Ti’s MSRP, and the non-XT presumably even cheaper. Nvidia’s upper-mid-range GPU isn’t retailing close to MSRP with all the price hikes right now, which leaves AMD with the chance to swoop in and gain back some market share.
If AMD can offer consumers a GPU that has performance equivalent to the RTX 5070 Ti but with a price point of under $700, then it will have struck a mighty blow against its rivals at Nvidia.
