ASUS “discussing” standalone ROG Xbox Ally X20, so you don’t have to bundle it with expensive AR glasses

Announced during Computex as part of ASUS’ 20th anniversary celebrations, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a limited-edition version of the Xbox Ally X featuring a larger 7.4″ screen, an upgrade from IPS to OLED, and improvements to controls such as TMR joysticks and a ‘Transforming D-Pad’. ASUS also says the handheld offers greater airflow thanks to a redesigned cooling system.
The X20 was originally being advertised as a bundle with XREAL’s R1 AR gaming glasses, and there was no indication of the handheld being sold separately. Considering the ROG XREAL R1 launched for a whopping $849.99 in the US, it’s fair to say that fans weren’t best pleased with the bundle. Well, now ASUS suggests you’ll be able to purchase the new X20 model on its own.
ROG Xbox Ally X20 release schedule is still being discussed
News of a standalone version comes courtesy of The Verge, which has had hands-on access to the device ahead of its launch. We still don’t know when it will be available for purchase, nor how much it will cost (with or without a bundle). The current flagship Xbox Ally X is still at its $999 launch price despite other handheld brands succumbing to shortage-related price hikes, so you can expect the new OLED to cross over into four digits.

We think it makes a lot more sense to make the Ally X20 available as a standalone product, regardless of its limited-edition status. Fans have been hoping for an OLED version of the ROG Ally for a while now, and it’s something ROG discussed with us in an interview in early 2025. On top of that, what’s the point of a new screen if you’re selling it with glasses to sidestep it?
