We first got to hear about ASUS ROG’s XREAL R1 gaming glasses at CES back in January, where they were unveiled as the world’s first pair of 240Hz XR gaming specs. Now, in May, the R1 is available to pre-order, priced at $849.99. As the name implies, the R1 XR glasses are the result of a partnership between ASUS ROG and the augmented reality brand XREAL.

In its announcement post, XREAL noted a “first half of 2026” release, so the pre-orders arrive safely in time to make this window. Pre-orders have already appeared on Best Buy, and the glasses are set to be available to reserve on the official XREAL shop at the end of the week, on May 17. At $849.99, it’s a pretty eye-watering expense – even compared to the rest of XREAL’s line-up.

ROG XREAL R1 gaming AR glasses explained

The first thing to note is that these glasses aren’t the same as a full VR headset, even if the price tag is significantly higher than many of the most popular VR headsets. Meta announced sweeping price hikes for its Quest 3 series last month, but even those remain hundreds of dollars cheaper than R1. The glasses ship with a ROG Control Dock for HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity.

The gaming glasses offer a massive 171-inch virtual screen for you to play flat-screen games on, rather than a full 3D VR experience. They’re fitted with Micro-OLED panels, with full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution at 240Hz and 0.01ms response time. ASUS has made sure that they offer seamless integration with its ROG Ally handhelds, thanks to a direct USB-C connection.

$849.99 is the price listed on Best Buy, and although we’re still waiting for a price tag to show up on the official XREAL shop, this is likely the MSRP for the product. The dock provided allows you to hook up the glasses to your gaming PC – it’s also compatible with Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch consoles.
