The hype around Battlefield 6 is growing fast, and one reason is the return of Portal. Originally introduced in Battlefield 2042, Portal lets players customize matches with their own rules and setups. It’s essentially a sandbox mode that allows players to create their own experiences.

In Battlefield 6, the feature has received such a massive upgrade that some fans are calling it the most exciting addition to the series yet. Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games and creator of the Unreal Engine, has praised the new approach, saying on X that EA’s move is “brilliant” and that he will be watching closely. BF6 doesn’t even use Unreal Engine – it uses DICE’s Frostbite engine.

Battlefield 6 will feature an updated version of Portal with Godot

In Battlefield 2042, Portal allowed players to tweak gameplay numbers like health, weapon damage, or movement speed. It also made it possible to add bots for custom matches. While it was fun, the features were limited. However, now, Battlefield 6 is expanding Portal into something much closer to a full map editor and game creation tool. No wonder Tim Sweeney is a fan, given the work Epic has done with Fortnite Creative.

Players can now add and move objects, letting them reshape the battlefield itself using a Godot-powered development kit. Godot is an open-source game engine being leveraged for the Portal feature. You’ll also be able to create custom user interfaces and use more advanced scripting options to design entirely new modes. This means you won’t just be adjusting rules anymore, as you’ll be able to invent something entirely new – great news for the modding community.

One of the most exciting parts of this new Portal is how easy it will be to share and discover community-made content. Battlefield 6 will feature a dedicated server browser where custom creations are front and center, instead of being buried deep in menus. EA also confirmed that some of the best modes will be hand-picked and added directly to official playlists, making sure the most creative designs reach a wider audience.

The improvements to Portal have caught the attention of big names in the industry. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games and the man behind Unreal Engine, praised EA’s decision in a post on X.

While Battlefield 6 will release in October, EA will be giving players a taste of the game through an open beta, which will kick off on August 9th and end on the 10th. Another open beta will go live on August 14th and end on the 17th. Those who watch partnered streamers can also start playing it early, on August 7th. EA’s CEO has expressed that it’s the right time to release the game, especially given the GTA 6 delay.

EA also shared the system requirements for the game, which you can check out to see if you’re PC is ready for the upcoming Battlefield game. Early tests show that AMD’s X3D processors perform well in the large-scale multiplayer FPS, with the 9800X3D already outperforming Intel’s i9-14900K.
