We can already tell that Black Myth: Wukong is going to be a huge hit. The number of people running the benchmark tool already gave us a clear indication of that, as did its status as Steam’s most wishlisted game. And now, we can see evidence of users pre-downloading the game en masse via Steam Download Stats.

Take a look at the top played games on Steam and you’ll generally see a list full of multiplayer games, particularly those ever-popular free-to-play titles such as Counter-Strike or Dota 2. Black Myth: Wukong on the other hand is single-player, so comparing it to something like Cyberpunk 2077 makes a whole lot of sense.

Steam download bandwidth used hits 70 Tbps ahead of launch

According to Steam’s recent download stats, a massive spike in bandwidth usage has been observed, coinciding with the Black Myth: Wukong preload period which recently began, just ahead of launch on August 20th. In the screenshot below, we witnessed a peak of 70 Tbps, 59.3 Tbps of which hails from Asia. North America contributed just over a tenth of the total. Reviews for the game went live a few days ago and they’re largely positive, further reinforcing the demand.

Black Myth: Wukong beats out Cyberpunk 2077’s launch

Looking back to Cyberpunk 2077 – a game that still sees massive player numbers nearly four years after release – we can see a peak of around 51 Tbps just after launch, at least according to this Reddit thread from 2020. North America made up a large portion of that back then, albeit not as dominant; it was much more of a balanced launch in terms of region. With Black Myth: Wukong looking to take the world by storm, particularly Asia, we’re interested to see how player numbers will look on day one.
