Valve doesn’t usually shy away from shaking up gameplay now and then, even in its most popular and longest-standing multiplayer franchises. Counter-Strike 2 just got a new update, and while Valve tags it as a ‘Small Update’ in the patch notes, it includes one of the biggest changes to gameplay we’ve seen since the launch of CS2.

The devs think “the decision to reload should have higher stakes” – so that’s what we’ve got. It no longer makes sense to reload after firing just a single bullet, or maybe even half the magazine, as reloading in Counter-Strike 2 will now dump all the remaining bullets in the mag, gone for good (until the start of the next round). Ammo management is now more of a conscious decision.

CS2’s March 18 update – what’s new?

[ GAMEPLAY ]

  • Reloading has been refactored to encourage more careful consideration of the use of ammo. When you reload a magazine-fed weapon, all remaining ammo in the magazine is discarded and a new, full magazine is taken from the reserves.
  • Reserve ammunition is now represented either as number of magazines, shells, or bullets, depending on the weapon.
  • The fill-level of the current weapon is now displayed below the ammo count.
  • Tuned reserve magazine counts per-weapon.

[ MAP GUIDES ]

  • Limited map guides are now available in Competitive and Retakes (first 5 rounds of the half, 30 node max).
  • sv_allow_annotations_access_level supports 3 values: 0 – disabled. 1 – limited view. 2 – full and editable.
  • sv_annotation_limits_max_rounds_per_half (default 5) determines how many rounds into the half guides are allowed. -1 for unlimited.
  • Minimal starter map guides have been added for all Active Duty maps.

[ WORKSHOP MAPS ]

  • Friends playing a Practice or Workshop map can be joined through the friends menu if they have Open Party set.

The thought process behind the change is talked about in this official blog post. It reveals that “most weapons” have three full clips, but some have even less to reward your resourcefulness. It’s inherently a nerf to blind firing through smokes or wallbang-able surfaces, unless you’ve got a backup primary weapon or don’t mind running around with a pistol/knife all round. It would be interesting to see this reload change paired with CS 1.6-style ammo purchases, but that’s not to be right now.

Users on Reddit are saying that the redesign is “legitimately meta-changing,” with another person going as far as calling it “game-breaking” stuff. The least we can say is that it certainly means players will second-guess when to pull the trigger. It discourages spam and spray-and-pray gameplay. We like to imagine hordes of silver-ranked lobbies swiftly running out of ammo and devolving into knife-on-knife combat in a clutch situation.

One saving grace is the fact that you can still cancel a reload before the animation is complete and your mag is dumped, saving you from wasting a chunk of your ammo if you instinctively reload or otherwise change your mind and quickly swap weapons. People are already asking for compromises online, but it only makes sense to see how it plays out before making any changes.
