When RoboCop: Rogue City was released in 2023, some fans thought that the concept would translate well into VR. An announcement by Coffee Moth Games about an upcoming title briefly raises hopes before dashing them.

Coffee Moth Games revealed on its official website that the studio was working with Amazon-MGM to produce a virtual reality shooter game using the RoboCop license. The game was titled RoboCop: Streets of Anarchy and promised ”original narrative and complex storylines interwoven with bombastic action.” For RoboCop fans and VR enthusiasts, this sounded perfect.

Full details were sketchy. Coffee Moth only specified that the game was going to be tailored for “specialized VR game controls, optimization and visual fidelity.” The company also mentioned it had a “full cycle game development,” presumably to calm fears it was a rushed cash-grab.

You can’t buy that for a dollar

The official Coffee Moth website initially listed RoboCop: Streets of Anarchy as intended for release on Meta Quest 3 and PC VR. However, it was later confirmed by UploadVR that this was in error.

In fact, RoboCop: Streets of Anarchy was never intended for home release. It was instead being designed as a VR arcade title.

Fans were understandably disappointed. Some took to social media to vent. Twitter/X user The Elite Institute had this to say: “I hate to have been the bearer of bad news but better than having loads of videos made about it that turned out to be wrong! Still, I hope we do get to see Robocop VR on home headsets. That would be great!”

Others managed to find some humour in the situation, such as user Substatica saying: “Please remove the references to Meta Quest. You have 20 seconds to comply.”

At least PC VR users can still use the Universal Unreal Engine VR Mod to experience RoboCop: Rogue City in VR. Even though it isn't quite the same.
