The long-running battle between Epic Games and Apple just reached another turning point, and this time, Epic is coming out on top again. But they’re not alone anymore, as Elon Musk’s xAI wants to step into the legal fight too.

Back in 2020, Epic Games made a bold move by adding their own payment system to Fortnite, letting players buy in-game items directly from Epic and skip Apple’s 30% cut on iOS. Apple responded by removing Fortnite from the App Store, saying Epic broke the rules.

Since then, Epic has been fighting to show that Apple has too much control over how apps are sold and updated on iPhones and iPads. They argue that Apple’s system limits competition and hurts both developers and users. And after years of court battles, Epic is starting to win.

Epic Games Store and Fortnite are coming back to iOS in Australia

Epic recently won a major case in Australia. An Australian court ruled that Apple and Google use their control over app stores to block competition and force developers to use their payment systems. That decision cleared the way for Fortnite and the Epic Games Store to return to iOS in Australia. This follows Epic’s earlier win in the U.S., where Fortnite returned to iOS and quickly became the #1 action game in the App Store.

While Epic’s battle has focused on gaming and app store payments, Elon Musk is now accusing Apple of unfair behavior in the world of apps. Musk claims that Apple is giving special treatment to OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and blocking other AI companies like his own, xAI, from reaching the top of the App Store. Musk believes Apple has changed how apps are ranked since partnering with OpenAI in June 2024, making it harder for competitors to succeed.
