The gaming industry is facing a difficult period, and Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney believes the problems affecting gaming hardware could continue for years. In a recent interview with Edge magazine, Sweeney warned that the current component shortage could keep putting pressure on the industry for the next three years.

Sweeney described the situation as one of the biggest disruptions the gaming industry has faced in decades. One of the main problems is the huge amount of money being invested in AI systems and data centers. Companies building this infrastructure need large amounts of the same components used in gaming hardware, allowing them to pay more and take priority over the entertainment industry. He describes the situation as “the worst crash we’ve seen since the 1980s”.

Shortages have already had an adverse effect on the cost of hardware components. Sweeney specifically pointed to RAM and storage prices, saying they are rising sharply and could continue to increase. He believes the industry should prepare for an ongoing supply problem affecting hardware used for gaming. Sweeney previously called RAM price hikes “a real problem”.

“We should expect there’s just going to be a continual supply crisis for all gaming-relevant hardware for the next three years.”

According to Sweeney, the long-term solution will require manufacturers to build more factories and increase production capacity. He expects that this will eventually happen, but the industry could face higher costs until then. The hardware problem is also arriving at a difficult time for game developers. AAA game development has become far more expensive over the past several years, with some major projects now requiring budgets of $250 million to $400 million.

Playable Worlds CEO Raph Koster has also warned about the rising cost of making games. He pointed to a long-term trend where development costs have increased dramatically with every passing decade. The higher budgets create more pressure on publishers because games now need to sell extremely well just to recover their investment.

Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden also believes the industry needs to become more comfortable with smaller and less expensive games. Instead of expecting every project to generate massive profits, developers could build games that cost less and can still be successful with more modest sales.

For now, Sweeney expects the hardware shortage to remain a major issue. With AI companies competing for components, rising memory and storage prices, and game development costs continuing to climb, the gaming industry could have a difficult few years ahead.
