Four GPT-5 model variants just got leaked by Microsoft ahead of OpenAI’s livestream reveal

GPT-5 is right around the corner. Yesterday, OpenAI announced a livestream for the expected GPT-5 announcement, and now Microsoft (specifically GitHub) has spilled the beans earlier than expected. The GitHub blog post, which has since been taken down but may be up and running by the time you read this, announces that “GPT-5 is now generally available in GitHub Models”.
Thanks to the magic of internet archiving, we can see exactly what OpenAI’s GPT-5 model brings us this August. As expected, the post notes that GPT-5 is “OpenAI’s most advanced model” and comes with major improvements to reasoning, code quality, and overall user experience.
GPT-5 is available in four different model variants
The following model variants of GPT-5 are available:
Source: archive.is / GitHub
- gpt-5: Designed for logic and multi-step tasks.
- gpt-5-mini: A lightweight version for cost-sensitive applications.
- gpt-5-nano: Optimized for speed and ideal for applications requiring low latency.
- gpt-5-chat: Designed for advanced, natural, multimodal, and context-aware conversations for enterprise applications.
GPT-5 will be accessible in GitHub’s Models tab and the Models playground, or via the GitHub API. Here, you’ll be able to experiment with prompts and use them alongside other models. The leaked blog post shows GPT-5 off versus Llama 4 Scout and Cohere v2, with the OpenAI model coming out on top as you’d expect.

OpenAI made a not-so-cryptic post on X about an upcoming announcement for the GPT-5 model. A livestream will be taking place, presumably on the OpenAI website here, at 10 AM Pacific Time today (August 7). That’s 1 PM Eastern Time or 6 PM if you’re based in the UK.
Now that the key details have been leaked, we’re keen to see what exactly OpenAI has to show off later today. We imagine they’ll want to flex their new ‘most advanced yet’ model with some demos. If you want to learn more about tools like ChatGPT, check out our ‘how to use ChatGPT‘ guide and review.
