Frame generation on Linux made available for everyone as Lossless Scaling gets fan-made port
Table of Contents
Late last year we saw DLSS Frame Generation support come to Linux via a Proton experimental update, and the open-source nature of AMD’s FSR frame gen means it is compatible Linux, as long as you have a relatively modern GPU – but this still relies on support on a per-game basis. As such, fans of Lossless Scaling may be happy to learn that a new project brings LS’s frame generation implementation to Linux.
Lossless Scaling is a paid tool (usually $7, but currently 40% off in the Steam Summer Sale) that enables upscaling and frame generation techniques to any GPU, in any game. For users on low-end hardware or players of games without native support, it has become a massively popular tool – holding a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam.
Lossless Scaling Frame Generation on Linux
A repository for the Linux port of Lossless Scaling Frame Generation is now available on GitHub. It is described as a “work-in-progress- with “still a long way to go,” so don’t expect widespread, bug-free support just yet. It has been made possible with a combination of DXVK and translation to Vulkan. This project has two contributors right now: PancakeTAS and Samueru-sama, neither of which are THS, the creator of Lossless Scaling.

The problem with LSFG-VK right now is that setting it up is a bit of hassle. SteamDeckHQ notes that it requires some manual work to get up and running, including inputting the “ENABLE_LSFG=1 %command%” command into your Steam game launch options. You can read the full installation guide here.
Although LSFG-VK is open-source and available on GitHub, it requires that you own Lossless Scaling (which is a closed-source piece of software). But as we said, it’s on sale in Steam’s summer sale right now, so it’s a great time to pick it up if you’re interested. One of the most recent updates to LS promises “up to 2x GPU load reduction“.
