GTA 6 will reportedly run at 30 FPS on PS5 and PS5 Pro

Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 Extended Look has finally given fans a much clearer idea of what to expect from the game’s performance on current-generation consoles. According to new reports, Rockstar is targeting 30 FPS on PS5, and the same target appears to apply to the PS5 Pro as well.
The information comes from YouTuber Davy Jones, who was among the content creators invited to visit Rockstar North. According to Jones, Rockstar’s head of development Rob Nelson confirmed that the game is targeting 30 FPS and that the studio isn’t currently confident that 60 FPS will be possible, even after launch.
That may not come as a huge surprise considering how detailed GTA 6 appears to be. The 27-minute Extended Look showed an incredibly dense world filled with NPCs, vehicles, realistic character animations, advanced physics, and extensive environmental detail.

Digital Foundry reached a similar conclusion after analyzing the footage. The technical experts believe Rockstar has built GTA 6 around a fixed 30 FPS target, using the available CPU and GPU resources to maximize visual detail and the overall complexity of the world.
The analysis praised the game’s character rendering, hair simulation, lighting, and world density. Digital Foundry also noted that the footage maintained a consistent frame rate, suggesting Rockstar has carefully balanced the game’s CPU and GPU workloads around the 33.3ms frame time required for 30 FPS.
This is important because reaching 60 FPS would require the game to produce every frame in only 16.7ms. According to Digital Foundry, there may simply not be enough CPU and GPU performance available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to double the frame rate without making major sacrifices elsewhere.
The PS5 Pro situation is a little less clear. Players naturally hoped Sony’s more powerful console could offer a 60 FPS option, but current reports suggest that Rockstar isn’t promising one. Instead, the PS5 Pro could potentially provide better image quality or additional graphical improvements, rather than a major frame-rate increase. Digital Foundry also considers a 60 FPS mode extremely unlikely based on what Rockstar has shown so far.
For players hoping to experience GTA 6 at 60 FPS, the eventual PC version may offer a better chance. However, even that could require powerful hardware because of the game’s heavy CPU demands.
