The developer of Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios, has been having a rough patch with its fanbase lately. Recent user reviews on Steam have tanked to Mostly Negative, forcing the devs to issue an official Q&A to address the backlash. Many of the annoyances are surrounding game balance, a lack of content, and technical issues. Arrowhead is now addressing that last point.

Helldivers 2 will be getting a new patch on May 27 that finally introduces upscaling support to the game. Players have long been asking for these modern features to be added, especially since they’re incredibly commonplace in games these days. In fact, Arrowhead even made a collage of posts like ‘DLSS when’ and ‘Day 1 of asking for PSSR Support’ on its Steam blog post.

Arrowhead is finally adding upscaling technology to Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 has long forgone native upscaling technology such as DLSS and FSR for Nvidia and AMD GPU users, respectively. Those two, plus XeSS for Intel graphics, round out the trio of upscaling technology for PC folk. On console, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 players get to enjoy FSR Upscaling, while those with the PlayStation 5 Pro can make use of PSSR.

To ensure maximum visual clarity without sacrificing performance, we have integrated the latest upscaling solutions tailored to your specific hardware.

  • PC
    • FSR (High-End): 4.0.3 (on supported GPUs)
    • FSR 3.1.5, DLSS 4.5, and XeSS 3.0 support.
  • PS5 Pro: PSSR 1
  • PS5: FSR 3.1
  • Xbox: FSR 3.1

As you can see above, only PSSR 1 is included as part of this upcoming patch, which suggests the new ‘upgraded PSSR’ commonly (but not officially) known as PSSR 2 is not yet supported for PS5 Pro players. Regardless, it’s a much-appreciated upgrade for those looking to enjoy more stable performance without taking a hit to the visual quality.

More optimizations include Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for the PS5 and PS5 Pro, Variable Rate Shading (VRS) to decrease GPU load across the board, and Dynamic Resolution Scaling (DRS) for all platforms to help maintain more stable frame rates. In particular, the “Performance” preset for the PS5 and Xbox Series X has been improved to a 1440p resolution.

There has been no confirmation of frame generation support. On the bright side, PC players are getting support for Nvidia Reflex and AMD Anti-Lag 2, both of which are designed to minimize latency.

Arrowhead says it has had help from Nixxes as part of these updates, presumably providing the most aid for the PC optimization side of things, given that’s what the company is best known for. Better yet, Arrowhead claims it’s “not stopping there” – and there will be “an ongoing campaign to improve performance across the fleet” later in the summer. The devs sure do love their puns.
