Just over a month ago, Valve began to notify Steam hardware customers in Europe of a security breach, and now the company is handing out updates – giving the all-clear and some peace of mind. Between July 29 and August 1, Valve’s European shipping partner, CEVA Logistics, was hit by a cyberattack. Last time we heard, an investigation was on the way.

Valve has now started emailing customers to confirm that their personal data has not been compromised, despite the fact that the “full internal investigation” is still ongoing. The company has just completed launching its trio of Steam-branded hardware this year, after Steam Frame pre-orders went live earlier this week. It follows the Steam Machine and Steam Controller.

We are writing to provide an update to our August 10 email regarding the recent cyberattack on CEVA Logistics.

While CEVA has not yet concluded their full internal investigation, we have learned that the attack was limited to a subset of their systems. In particular, the system that processed your Steam hardware order was not affected. There is currently no indication that your data was accessible to the attacker at any time during this incident.

We are sorry for the delay while this was confirmed and apologize for any confusion or alarm that resulted from our prior notification. If you have any remaining questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Steam Support.

Following the news of the security breach last week, there was a worry that Steam hardware customers would face a wave of scam/phishing emails – assuming hackers had access to customer names, addresses, and phone numbers. It seems this should no longer be a problem. If you’ve picked up Steam hardware in Europe lately, be sure to check your emails for an official update from Valve. As the investigation is still not fully complete, we may hear another update in the near future.
