Customers in the United States have noticed dwindling stock for the PlayStation VR2 headset, and it’s completely out of stock at the official PlayStation Store in the US (many other regions are fine), as well as at major stores such as Target. After doing a sweep of popular retailers, we discovered a lack of any brand-new stock, leaving only pre-owned and refurbished options.

In early 2025, Sony cut down the price of the PSVR 2 to just $399, bringing it close to the likes of the budget-friendly Meta Quest 3S, and it has stayed there ever since, only dropping lower during sales periods and special promotions. In contrast, the Quest 3S was hit by a price increase earlier this year due to rising hardware costs (particularly memory and storage).

In other headset news, Valve finally launched the Steam Frame earlier this week, shipping for $1,059 at the cheapest. Following its launch, Valve admits the headset should have been “much more affordable,” but RAM shortages and price hikes have forced their hand. Sony’s PSVR2, in contrast, has no onboard RAM (or storage), as it is not a standalone device.

As such, Sony shouldn’t need to worry about industry-wide memory shortages with the PSVR 2 (and we’ve already seen PlayStation 5 consoles be hiked), so it’s difficult to know why it has suddenly disappeared off virtual shelves. There has been no official comment from Sony on PSVR2 stock, so we can only wait to see whether it makes a return in the near future.
