Another impressive VR headset has entered the market in the form of Valve’s new Steam Frame, but it seems there’s still some time to wait before we start seeing it show up in official Steam Survey results. The latest results, for September 2026, show that Meta Quest headsets are still leading the pack, currently occupying the top three spots, with the Meta Quest 3 on top.

It’s not the first time the Meta Quest 3 is in pole position, but it had dropped off in favor of the older Quest 2 model. This trend has now reversed, with ownership of the third-gen model rising 0.89% while the second-gen drops by 1.17%, despite Meta upping current-gen headset prices by up to $100; Meta still says the Quest 3 and 3S are the “best-value” VR headsets available.

Latest VR headset stats on the Steam survey

According to the survey, just 1.35% of Steam users have a VR headset registered on their device, so it’s still a tiny percentage of the entire Steam user base. Either way, the Meta Quest 3 has now overtaken the Quest 2 (it originally launched with Oculus branding, but is now also known as the Meta Quest 2), and the more budget-friendly Meta Quest 3S model trails behind.

Valve Index also retains the fourth spot in September’s results, though ownership is dropping off. The newly launched Steam Frame doesn’t yet make the list, which is understandable given the relatively slow reservation queue system in place. Reportedly, Valve sent out another wave of reservations a couple of days ago, and delivery numbers (based on user reports) are climbing.

Meta officially discontinued the Quest 2 in late 2024, so it’s no surprise to see it drop off. Brand-new models have become difficult to source, with only renewed variants showing up at popular retailers such as Amazon. Meta has yet to announce a fourth generation of the popular VR headsets, instead focusing its VR efforts on the new Meta VR Glasses during Meta Connect 2026. That’s not to say the Quest series is done for, however, as the Quest 4 is still rumored, but it’s not expected this year.

Steam Frame without the RAM?

Would you buy a cheaper version of the Steam Frame that doesn’t work standalone?
