Midjourney AI image generation fully upgrades to V7 “after months of testing”
Table of Contents
The latest version of Midjourney is here, with some exciting new features along with much better overall performance thanks to increased efficiencies in multiples areas. The company first announced that it was beginning Alpha testing on V7 back in April (on the 4th specifically), and it’s taken a while to get it to this stage of completion.
For those not in the know, Midjourney is a generative AI program that specialises in producing images based on text prompts. First launched as an open Beta in 2022, it is the biggest competitor to ChatGPT’s image generation technology, and is fully integrated with the Discord app, allowing you to direct it using Discord commands. So what are these new features?

Midjourney V7 vs V6.1 – How does the latest version compare?
As the Midjourney team detailed in a recent post on Discord, below are the major changes that come with V7.
- Higher image quality & coherence
- Better prompt understanding
- A new ‘Omni-reference’ feature (type ‘–oref’) that allows you to insert consistent characters and objects into scenes
- A new ‘Draft mode’ (type ‘–draft’) that has 10x faster image generation speeds
- Improved Moodboard algorithms
- Improved Style Reference (type ‘–sref’) algorithms
Most of these are improvements of existing features (which is still very much welcome), but ‘Omni-reference’ and ‘Draft mode’ are the two brand new features.
Draft mode is particularly exciting, as it generates images at ten times the speed, with half the GPU power needed. The trade-off is that the resolution of the images produced is lower, but once you’ve worked out what you want you can always re-create it with the main function.
