AMD released its next generation of desktop CPUs, the Ryzen 9000 series, in August. At the launch, four processors were released – the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X, the Ryzen 9 9900X, the Ryzen 7 9700X, and the Ryzen 5 9600X.
At launch, the prices of these processors were fairly competitive, but still, the CPUs weren’t selling as much as the company expected. To tackle this, AMD slashed the prices of the newly-released Zen 5 CPUs to incentivize gamers to adopt the newer processors. In fact, we saw the Zen 5 processors being discounted soon after the release. And now, the processors have got yet another round of price drops just over a month after the release.
AMD’s Zen 5 CPUs get a fresh round of price drops
According to the latest price updates on Micro Center, the Ryzen 9000 series has been reduced. The flagship Ryzen 9 9950X processor was priced at $649.99 at launch, and now it is selling for $589.99, which we think is a significant discount.
In addition to the discounts, Micro Center is also offering free games with purchase including Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines II and Unknown 9 Awakening. Here’s what the price drops look like:
Processor | Price at Launch | Price at Micro Center – September 25th |
Ryzen 9 9950X | $649.99 | $589.99 |
Ryzen 9 9900X | $499.99 | $439.99 |
Ryzen 7 9700X | $359.99 | $319.99 |
Ryzen 5 9600X | $279.99 | $269.99 |
We even had a look at the price history of the Ryzen 9 9950X CPU on Amazon. Since its release, the lowest price of the flagship CPU on Amazon was $611.34. This means the current price of $589.99 on Micro Center is the lowest we have seen so far in the US.
Are the Ryzen 9000 series CPUs already at their lowest prices?
At the moment, it’s hard to tell whether these are the best prices for the Zen 5 CPUs. AMD has been fairly aggressive with the price cuts since the launch. If you take a look at the difference between the launch prices and current prices, you will notice a 9% to 12% decline. However, considering that the holiday season is just around the corner, these processors may get their prices slashed a bit more.
With that being said, if you’re looking to get yourself the latest high-performing CPU, this might be the right opportunity. Plus, you’re getting two new games bundled in. But if you’re not in a hurry, then waiting to see if the Ryzen 9000 processors will enjoy a holiday discount makes sense. Likewise, the upcoming launch of 9000X3D chips, rumored for early 2025, may be another catalyst for deals.
If all else fails, it’s fair to assume that the price will drop further once we draw closer to the next generation of AMD desktop processors, though this won’t be a while now. And finally, competition from Intel’s upcoming 15th gen could prompt Team Red to rethink its pricing.
