It’s safe to say that OLED monitors have set the gold standard for gaming on PC, delivering a crisp image with deep blacks and incredible response times. While OLED delivers an excellent gaming experience, there are a couple of drawbacks. Lower brightness levels have always been one, though this can be mitigated in the right environment, and panel manufacturers have improved brightness with each generation.

The other weakness is burn-in. OLED monitors are more susceptible to burn-in, though manufacturers have been implementing all sorts of features to prevent this from becoming a problem and lowering the lifespan of their displays. For MSI, this is OLED Care 2.0, which activates its Panel Protect automatically every 16 hours; however, this has been changed to be less disruptive.

OLED Care 2.0 will soon refresh the panel every 24 hours

According to a new blog post from MSI, it is updating its Panel Protect (pixel refresh) feature to activate less often. While this may seem like less protection overall, MSI promises that it will maintain the durability of the panel. The company says that users report the 16-hour interval could “unexpectedly interrupt their ongoing activities”. We think that a 24-hour interval makes much more sense, so you can have a set time of the day to refresh when the panel is generally not in use.

“To enhance user experience and minimize disruptions, MSI has extended the refresh interval to 24 hours, ensuring greater flexibility while maintaining the panel's exceptional durability.”

The latest OLED Care 2.0 update will be available for download starting from May 2025 and will be available across MSI’s entire QD-OLED line-up via a firmware update. MSI notes that updating to the latest version will not affect any active warranties for your monitor, including the brand’s 3-year burn-in warranty.

You can read more about how OLED Care prevents burn-in in this official blog post. Industry-standard techniques such as pixel shifting and pixel refreshing are included.
