New RTX 4070s get downgraded GDDR6 memory, but the packaging doesn’t make it clear

Table of Contents
Nvidia has recently introduced a new variant of its popular GeForce RTX 4070 GPU, featuring GDDR6 memory instead of the original GDDR6X. This update comes following the SUPER variant earlier this year and a non-standard model with the AD103 GPU, adding to the already convoluted landscape of 4070-tier options. However, an early look at the packaging doesn’t make it so clear which variant you’re getting.
While Nvidia claims that the performance of the GDDR6-based 4070 will be similar to the GDDR6X version, real-world benchmarks will be necessary to confirm this. The switch to GDDR6 could potentially impact performance slightly, especially in memory-intensive workloads. We previously reported on the GDDR6 downgrade leak, and it’s now a reality, all stemming from a “batch quality issue” last month.

Differentiating memory types
One of the biggest challenges for gamers is identifying the exact memory type in the various 4070 models being released. Many manufacturers are lumping the GDDR6 versions in with the original GDDR6X models, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. This lack of clarity can lead to confusion and potential disappointment for those seeking a specific memory type.
Here’s a breakdown of the available GDDR6-based GeForce RTX 4070 models according to VideoCardz:
- PALIT: GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 12GB DUAL NE64070019K9-1048D, DUAL OC NE64070S19K9-1048D, WHITE NE64070019K9-1048L, WHITE OC NE64070S19K9-1048L
- GAINWARD: GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 12GB GHOST OC NE64070S19K9-1048B, GHOST NE64070019K9-1048B
- ZOTAC: GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 12GB DESTROYER OC HA, NEBULAE OC
It’s important to note that these models are not yet available and are expected to be released next month. Gamers should wait for benchmarks and reviews to make an informed decision about which 4070 model best suits their needs and budget.
The introduction of the GDDR6-based RTX 4070 adds another layer of complexity to the graphics card market. While the performance difference between GDDR6 and GDDR6X may be minimal in some cases, it’s essential for gamers to understand the implications and make a choice based on their specific requirements.
