It’s no secret that the RTX 40 series has been a big success as Nvidia’s profits seem to see no end. And with some time to go until we can think about buying an RTX 50 series GPU, some people may be looking to upgrade at the tail-end of this current generation. However, a reported supply shortage is hitting the “mid-to-high-end” cards – namely the RTX 4070 and above.

The good news for most of you though is that this shortage only seems to be affecting the Chinese market, where the dynamic can differ significantly to other regions. That being said, GPU production is heavily based in China, so it could still have a knock-on effect elsewhere. On the plus side, this incident will likely only “briefly affect the production capacity”.

RTX 4070 and above see supply issues in China

We came across this news via well-known leaker harukaze5719 but it originally hails from ChannelGate via BoardChannels. According to the source, there will be a short supply of 4070 and higher GPUs during August. The blame has been put on a shortage of GDDR6X video memory, tracing back to quality control issues. Note that this issue does not affect RTX 4060 Ti and below models, as these use cut-down GDDR6 memory instead.

According to ChannelGate, a batch of products “may have had quality control problems and were required to be replaced”. This has put a strain on production capacity, directly affecting all of Nvidia’s latest GPUs that feature GDDR6X memory, which is “exclusively supplied by Micron”. As we mentioned before though, this hiccup shouldn’t last too long at all.

Another thing to note that ChannelGate touched on is the fact that Nvidia has “always adopted a supply and demand balance strategy” in relation to 40 series GPUs in China. Strict control of order volume is to be expected in order to maintain an even balance of supply and demand.
