The Nintendo Switch 2 was recently announced, and fans all over the world are excited to get their hands on it. The new handheld console promises several improvements over the original Switch, including better performance, a new display, and updated features.
Because of how popular the first model was, we’re expecting the Switch 2 to sell out quickly when it launches. To help with this, Nintendo has opened pre-orders ahead of time, allowing players to secure their units before release day. However, there’s some bad news for those living in China, as the company has decided to postpone the Switch 2 launch in the country.
Nintendo Switch 2 launch delayed in China
Pre-orders for the Switch 2 are currently live in the UK, thanks to which fans can book their consoles early and avoid missing out when stock runs low. Pre-orders are a good way to make sure you get the product on launch day without waiting in long lines or dealing with limited availability. However, if you’re currently living in China and are eagerly waiting to get your hands on the console, you’ll be disappointed to learn that Nintendo has decided to postpone the launch of Switch 2 in the country. According to Nikkei Asia, the decision has been made due to strict government regulations.
For those wondering, all consoles and games in China must go through a strict approval process, which often leads to delays and restrictions. It seems Nintendo is currently facing these challenges with the Switch 2, which has led to a delay in its launch in China. This doesn't mean people in China won't get the console – it just means they'll likely get it later than others.
US & Canada pre-orders have also been delayed
On the other hand, those living in the US and Canada are currently facing issues with pre-ordering the Switch 2. A major announcement made by former US President Donald Trump on the same day as the console reveal has changed things. The announcement introduced new tariffs that affect global trade, and this has created unexpected issues for companies that import products into the United States.
One of the new tariffs includes a 24% fee on exports from Japan, which directly affects Nintendo, as the company is based in Japan. Because of this, Nintendo has delayed the pre-orders in the US for the Switch 2. In an official statement, the company said, “Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not start April 9 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” Nintendo confirmed that the console is still expected to launch on June 5 in the US. However, they might open pre-orders before that.
For those living in Canada, Nintendo said, “Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025 in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.”
