Nvidia may be dominating the GPU space, but in the world of CPUs, Intel and AMD have been fierce rivals for decades. Overall, CPU market share has long been in Intel’s favor, though the rise of Ryzen has allowed Team Red to overtake its rival in the desktop sector. However, turning our attention to servers, AMD has made some incredible gains in 2025, closing the gap to Intel massively to bring it to a near 35/65 split. A prior report suggested a 50/50 split, but this was not accurate.

At the end of last year, AMD only controlled around 10% of the server market and had remained in that ballpark area for the past few years. These stats come from PassMark Software, and users noticed an unusually large spike in server market share for AMD. The company has been making solid progress with its latest EPYC server processor family.

The unusual spike called for some investigation and cleanup of the data. PassMark soon chimed in to confirm that data manipulation was the cause for the drastic change, but even after cleaning it all up, it notes that AMD is “still doing well”. Incorrect stats led people to believe that AMD and Intel had reached a 50/50 share for servers.

According to PassMark’s total CPU market share stats, Intel controls 59.8% of the market, with AMD enjoying 39.0% of the share. The remaining scraps are split between Apple and Qualcomm. The desktop market share is almost dead even, with AMD slightly ahead with 50.8%, while Intel continues to dominate the laptop market, making up 73.6% of laptop processors based on PerformanceTest benchmark results submitted to the site.
