A few weeks ago, leaks for the “ROG Ally 2” surfaced online, revealing two models: black and white. The black model was expected to be the higher-end option, featuring the Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip with 8 cores and a 36W TDP, compared to the white model's 4-core, 20W design. However, what caught everyone's attention was the design, which, while seemingly more ergonomic, was quickly labeled “ugly” by fans.

Fast forward to today, Computex 2025 is in its final stages, and ROG Ally fans are still waiting for any news about this mystery handheld and whether it will be released at all. This year's Computex didn't offer much for handheld fans, aside from MSI dipping its toes into AMD-powered devices. That's likely because companies like Lenovo and Nintendo had already revealed their upcoming handhelds. And Valve doesn’t seem to be in any rush to bring out a new Steam Deck.

Fans respond: No need to upgrade or settle for alternatives

While hopes for the ASUS ROG Ally 2 are slowly fading, it seems many weren't expecting a major reveal in the first place. In fact, for some fans, the ROG Ally X is already a solid handheld, and they don't believe there's much that needs improving. Instead, they'd rather ASUS take its time and come back later with something that actually feels like an upgrade.

On the other hand, some attention has shifted toward handhelds that were announced at Computex, particularly the new MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM, featuring the powerful AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme, an AMD Radeon 890M GPU, and up to 24GB of RAM. To our knowledge, it’s the first handheld to use the Z2 Extreme, making it a strong contender against both the ROG Ally and Legion Go.

And while these two camps largely sum up the current sentiment, there are still fans holding out hope for a handheld launch this year, more specifically in June. That's because part of the ROG Ally 2 leak suggested the black model was Xbox-focused, similar to the upcoming Legion Go SteamOS version, leading some to believe we could see an announcement during the Xbox Games Showcase. The showcase will take place on June 8th at 10 AM, Pacific Time.
