The launch of the RTX 5060 Ti was accompanied by many analysts and reviewers repeating one question: Why did the 8GB model exist? It seems Nvidia is addressing this problem with plans for a non-standard VRAM configuration for future models.

Nvidia's launch of the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti was accompanied by accusations that Nvidia was denying reviewers access to the 8GB model. Performance analysis showed that the 8GB model was already obsolete. When questioned on this, Nvidia explained that the lack of VRAM was due to the memory bus configuration and the availability of larger RAM modules.

Up to 24 GB of VRAM?

Evidence uncovered on Chiphell forums suggests that Nvidia is planning to address this issue with an upcoming RTX 50 refresh. This refresh will carry the ‘Super' moniker, with two models planned, the RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super. These cards would use 3GB memory modules instead of the usual 2GB modules.

According to the leak, the RTX 5070 Super could use up to six modules, enabling a total VRAM capacity of 18 GB. The RTX 5080 Super, meanwhile, could handle up to a whopping 24GB of VRAM, matching last-gen’s RTX 4090. Some analysts have suggested that it would also make sense for a potential RTX 5060 Ti Super to use these modules, giving it 12GB of VRAM capacity. So far, though, there are no signs that Nvidia has plans for this.

It should be noted that there were previous rumours of a 24GB VRAM version of the RTX 5080 card, which was accidentally posted by some Nvidia board partners. The poor availability of 3GB RAM modules is believed to have changed those plans, however.

Since the vanilla version of the RTX 50 series has only just launched, it is unlikely that we will see these Super versions anytime soon. The closest estimate for launch is Q4 of 2025, or more likely, CES 2026.
