Nvidia pushes Multi Frame Generation even further with new 6X mode in DLSS 4.5

DLSS is Nvidia’s AI upscaling technology, designed to provide GPU users a significant boost in games. And at CES 2026, they announced DLSS 4.5 with a new 6X Multi Frame Generation mode, pushing frame generation even further.
DLSS 4 first debuted at CES 2025 and quickly became one of the best upscaling technologies out there. Multi Frame Generation was a top-tier feature, exclusive to RTX 50 series GPUs, as it used the power of artificial intelligence to generate up to three additional frames on top of the traditionally rendered one. While DLSS 4 supports over 250 games and apps, DLSS 4.5 aims to raise this number to over 400 games and apps.
DLSS 4.5 upgrades for RTX GPU owners
One of the biggest upgrades in DLSS 4.5 is the second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution. This new model uses five times more compute power than the original and has been trained on a much larger and higher-quality dataset. The result is cleaner edges, better lighting, improved motion clarity, and more stable images in fast-moving scenes. Nvidia says this upgrade improves image quality across all DLSS modes, with the biggest gains seen in Performance and Ultra Performance modes.
DLSS 4.5 also changes how lighting is handled. Unlike older techniques that reduced flickering by compressing lighting data, the new model works directly in linear space, which matches how game engines render scenes. This allows bright lights, reflections, and neon signs to keep their full detail and color range without crushed shadows or muted highlights.

The headline feature, however, is Multi Frame Generation 6X mode. With DLSS 4.5, RTX 50-series GPUs can generate up to five additional frames for every traditionally rendered frame, resulting in a maximum 6X performance multiplier. When combined with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, the system can push performance up to your monitor’s refresh rate. Nvidia claims this enables 240+ FPS gaming with path tracing on RTX 50-series GPUs.
Moving from 4X to 6X Multi Frame Generation can boost 4K frame rates by up to 35% in path-traced games on RTX 50-series cards. Nvidia says responsiveness remains strong thanks to Nvidia Reflex, which minimizes latency even when generating extra frames. DLSS 4.5 also improves in-game UI clarity. By using more engine data, static elements like minimaps and menus appear sharper and cleaner in games such as The Outer Worlds 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Starfield.
In the video below, Nvidia revealed the difference between the current and upcoming versions. In Black Myth: Wukong, DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation 4X delivers 185 FPS. But with DLSS 4.5 and Multi Frame Generation 6X turned on, the FPS jumps to over 240.
For those wondering, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation works automatically. Instead of using a fixed multiplier, it adjusts frame generation in real time based on GPU load and display refresh rate. In demanding scenes, it increases frame generation to keep gameplay smooth. When performance improves, it scales back to reduce unnecessary processing. This is similar to the ‘adaptive frame generation’ technology that we first saw in Lossless Scaling, a popular app on Steam.
In any case, DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution is already available via the Nvidia App beta, with a full release coming on January 13. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X mode, however, will roll out this Spring, exclusive to RTX 50-series GPUs. Nvidia’s latest GeForce Game Ready Driver, 591.74 – WHQL, is now available for download.
