The launch of AMD’s most recent Ryzen 9000 series CPUs has been and gone – it didn’t garner the best reviews we’ve ever seen, but we wouldn’t exactly say it was disastrous. We reviewed several SKUs from the new line-up, including the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X, calling it the “best performing AMD CPU so far” – so it’s not all bad.

However, we could never stop ourselves from thinking that waiting for X3D is the correct play here, especially if you’re looking for this generation’s best CPU for gaming. While recent speculation would place the launch of the first 9000X3D sometime early next year, a new development suggests we could get the 9800X3D as soon as late October.

9800X3D rumored to arrive in late October or early November

According to a new rumor on the forum site Chiphell, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date should be “at the end of October”. The 9950X3D and 9900X3D also get a mention, but “some new features” for these models may be one reason they are estimated for “early next year”.

Following the Chiphell speculation, another prominent semiconductor forecaster, Hoang Anh Phu, instead suggests that the 9800X3D will be arriving in early November. We could speculate that the new chip will be launched in late October, but then be available to buy in early November – but we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, this is an exciting development and could give AMD a real boost well ahead of CES 2025 in January, where the Ryzen 9 X3D CPUs may be showcased.

We’d say that the 9800X3D is likely the CPU most PC gamers are looking forward to right now; if you’re in the market for an upgrade that is. The popularity of the 7800X3D and previous-gen 5800X3D is evident at this point and we expect this trend to continue with the 9000 series and beyond.
