The Ryzen X3D lineup started with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and since then, the chips with the “X3D” moniker have been regarded as the best gaming CPUs on the market. The next highly anticipated processor is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, so we’ve put together its release date, what price it’ll launch with, and how the specs are shaping up. The good news is it’s almost here – 9800X3D reviews have already gone live and reveal the CPU is well ahead of the competition in gaming.
AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series launch didn’t go as well as expected, but Team Red has a chance to redeem itself with the gaming variants of its 9000 processors. We can’t deny the performance of these gaming processors as in our 5800X3D, 7800X3D, 7900X3D, and 7950X3D reviews, we saw excellent in-game performance over their “X” counterparts.
So, without wasting another moment, let’s see when we can expect the 9800X3D – especially since X3D is what we’re waiting for most.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date
The SVP and General Manager of Computing & Graphics Group at AMD, Jack Huynh, officially confirmed through a video announcement on his X account that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will launch on November 7. At the moment, we don’t know which other X3D processors will launch on the same day, as AMD has only confirmed the 9800X3D so far.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D price
AMD has confirmed that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will launch at a price of $479. Rumors had been circulating that it would cost $30 more than the 7800X3D, bringing its total price to $479. And it seems like the rumors were true.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D specs
Previously, MaxSun’s CPU support specifications revealed that we might get a 16-core and 32-thread processor with a base frequency of 4.7 GHz, a 96MB L3 cache, and a 120W TDP. Since the Ryzen 9000 series uses 4nm CPU process technology, the energy requirements were expected to be low, but if it is Ryzen 9 instead of Ryzen 7, the increase in core count could justify the higher 120W power draw.
But now, AMD has officially confirmed the actual specifications of the 9800X3D, which are a bit different from what was leaked. We’ve also included the 7800X3D specs in the table to let you know what’s different.
Specifications | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | Ryzen 7 7800X3D |
---|---|---|
Cores | 8 | 8 |
Threads | 16 | 16 |
Base clock speed | 4.7 GHz | 4.2 GHz |
Boost clock speed | 5.2 GHz | 5 GHz |
Total Cache | 104 MB | 96MB |
TDP | 120W | 120W |
AMD has also confirmed that users will be able to overclock the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a feature that was missing in the previous-gen X3D chips. On top of that, the company claims that it offers 20% better gaming performance than the Core Ultra 9 285K. To touch further on performance, recent benchmarks on Geekbench show the new 9000 series chip overclocked and outperfoming the 7800X3D by 24%, so we should see a sizeable uplift this generation for enthusiasts.
Will you need a new motherboard for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D?
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D will be part of the Zen 5 generation, meaning it’ll need an AM5 motherboard. So, if you’re moving from the LGA1700 or AM4 processors, you’ll need to purchase not only an AM5 motherboard but also DDR5 RAM. However, if you’ve got a Ryzen 7000/8000 series processor, you can easily mount the 9800X3D on your existing motherboard without any issues.
The list of compatible motherboards encompasses anything using an AM5 socket chipset, which you can see on AMD’s website. This includes the new X870E and X870 motherboards, as well as X670E, X670, B650E, B650, and A620.
How much better is the 9800X3D than last gen?
We’ve compared the 9800X3D and 7800X3D specs above and there are some noticeable generational improvements, but it doesn’t paint the full picture. Again, the new 9000 series processor now has access to overclocking which is a significant development for enthusiasts.
Following the release of benchmarks from reviewers such as Gamers Nexus, we can see the 9800X3D is well above the competition, providing a solid performance boost compared to the prior 7800X3D and 5800X3D predecessors. Just ahead of launch, a Geekbench leak showcased the 9800X3D running at a boosted 5.46GHz clock speed, demonstrating that it can outperform the 7800X3D by 24% in synthetic benchmarks.
