OpenAI is joining forces with PayPal to embed the latter’s digital wallet into the popular ChatGPT AI chatbot. Reportedly, the deal was sealed over the weekend and confirms plans that will enable “Millions of ChatGPT users” to “check out instantly using PayPal,” according to a press release from PayPal earlier today.
The collaboration will allow users to essentially use ChatGPT as their own personal AI-powered shopper, while connecting them with their PayPal wallet for easier payments in a few clicks or taps. With access to PayPal’s global merchant network, the implementation is set to benefit “tens of millions of small businesses” alongside the largest brands on the planet.

PayPal boss Alex Chriss says agentic commerce is “a whole new paradigm for shopping,” and this integration is the next logical step for making ChatGPT better suited for AI-assisted shopping.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop. By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases.”

Agentic commerce in ChatGPT is planned to be available in 2026 and will support multiple funding options as part of PayPal’s Instant Checkout service. This includes bank, balance, and card payments. PayPal’s buyer and seller protections and post-purchase services, such as tracking and dispute resolution, will also be compatible.

This isn’t the first time PayPal has teamed up with an AI firm. AI-powered answer engine Perplexity AI recently added an offer that provides a whole year of Perplexity Pro for free when you connect the service to PayPal – usually the service costs $20 a month.
Following the news of PayPal’s partnership with OpenAI, CNBC reported a 13% surge in the former’s shares.
