The difficult launch of Nvidia's RTX 50 series of GPUs presented a golden opportunity for AMD and its new RX 9070 Graphics cards. It seems that they have taken full advantage of this chance to grow their market share, especially in Japan. AMD has played second fiddle to Nvidia for years when it comes to dominance of the graphics card market. That might be changing if news from Japan is of any indication.

During a round table discussion held in Akihabara, Japan, representatives from AMD spoke about the reception of the Radeon RX 9070 series which came with a stunning revelation. AMD's Japan's Marketing Manager, Yoshiaki Sato said: “Radeon's sales share in Japan has reached 45%.”

AMD Radeon GPUs enjoy a surge in popularity

This figure is said to be a record high for AMD, though another voice in the round table discussion, Mr Haraguchi of ASRock said he would prefer the market share to go as high as 70%. It was pointed out that the RX 9070 was sold out in many retailers in Japan. The other representatives of AMD board partners present, including names from PowerColor, Asus, and Gigabyte said they were unable to remedy the supply issues due to a lack of GPU chips.

A dose of humor was added to the situation when Mr. Sato said: “AMD isn't used to selling graphics cards.” This response resulted in laughter from everyone in the room. Reports from just ahead of the RX 9070 series launch revealed that AMD was making gains in the GPU market, proving that 2025 could be a big year for Team Red.

AMD is riding high on the success of the RX 9070, but it seems the company was not quite ready for the sheer level of demand. Unlike the rivals at Team Green, AMD is not hampered by production problems like missing ROPs, it is simply a case of production capacity.

If Team Red wants to continue to gain on Nvidia, it will need to find a way to ramp up production in order to meet demand. Perhaps then, the supply issues can finally be solved and prices will finally come down to the MSRP.
