AMD is making gains in GPU market share, and that’s even before the RX 9070 series launch

Table of Contents
Towards the end of last year, GPU market share stats revealed that AMD’s share had dropped to just 10% amid an industry-wide sales decline, while the green team was enjoying its 90%. However, with the launch of their RTX 50 series GPUs, Nvidia might have opened the door for AMD, as due to stock issues, overpriced listings, and performance criticism, gamers are now turning their heads toward the red team.
In fact, recent GPU market data showed that AMD’s share in the GPU market nearly doubled to 14.65% in January 2025, up from just 7.69% a year ago, while Nvidia’s dropped to the 84% range. However, the situation has changed in just a week, as new data shows AMD making even more gains, even before the RX 9070 series GPU launch on March 6th.
- GPU: Navi 48
- Core: 4096
- VRAM: 16GB GDDR6
- Memory Bus width: 256-bit
- Base/boost clock speed: 2400MHz/3060MHz

AMD stands at 17% GPU market share in recent stats
According to the GPU market share data shared by Jon Peddie Research for the fourth quarter of 2024 (December 2024 to February 2025), AMD is once again gaining significant market share, rising from 14% just a week ago to 17% now. This means Nvidia, which previously dominated with a 90% market share, has now dropped to 82%, marking another 2% decline compared to last time.

AMD is certainly seeing its best sales performance, and part of the credit for this market shift goes to Nvidia and their RTX 50 series GPUs, which have turned the tables in the red team's favor. On top of that, we recently saw official performance figures for the upcoming RDNA 4-based flagship RX 9070 XT, which is not only challenging current-gen AMD GPUs but also delivering similar performance to the RTX 5070 Ti at a lower price point.
AMD’s next-gen GPUs launch today
AMD’s upcoming RX 9070 XT and 9070 have impressed reviewers like Hardware Unboxed, who are calling them a “no-brainer” versus Nvidia’s rival offering. On top of that, AMD’s GPUs are not expected to face limited stock issues either, as one large retailer claims to have “over 1,000” RX 9070 XT cards in stock. That said, the GPUs are set to go live today, and if things continue in this direction, AMD might further chip away at Nvidia’s market share dominance.
