The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is easily one of the best handheld gaming devices available right now. It offers strong performance, a smooth display, and full access to PC gaming libraries, making it a great option for anyone who wants to play games on the go. While it’s not as powerful or feature-full as the Xbox Ally X, it’s still a solid pickup. And if you’ve been planning to buy up, now might be a good time, as the device is currently available at a discounted price on Amazon.

What’s the ROG Xbox Ally all about?

The ROG Xbox Ally is usually listed for $599.99, but thanks to an ongoing deal, you can now grab it for $549. This is an 8% discount, which brings the total savings to $50. While it may not seem like a massive drop, it still makes the handheld a bit more affordable, especially considering the features it offers.

The device runs on Windows 11, which means you can access your full library of PC games from Xbox and other platforms. With support for Xbox Play Anywhere, you can continue your progress across devices without any issues. Windows 11 now also benefits from the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE), designed to make gaming a little more console-like and optimized for the popular operating system, particularly targeting handhelds like the ROG Ally series.

Under the hood, the handheld is powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, which delivers solid performance for modern games. It also comes with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a 512GB SSD, giving you enough speed and storage for most games.

The ROG Xbox Ally also features a 120Hz screen with FreeSync Premium support, which helps keep gameplay smooth and reduces screen tearing. It also offers 500 nits of brightness, along with a Gorilla Glass touchscreen, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Battery life is supported by a 60Wh battery, and the device also includes fast charging, allowing it to go from 0% to 50% in around 30 minutes.

The best part is that you’ll also get 3 months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with the handheld, so you’ll be able to access a large library of games right away.

Xbox Ally dodges the price hikes

Microsoft has managed to keep the price of the new Xbox Ally handhelds down to their MSRP at a time when the gaming (and wider PC) industry is being hit with AI-fuelled price hikes due to heavy demand for memory and storage components. In the handheld space, one notable example is the Lenovo Legion Go, including the current-gen Legion Go 2. Retro handheld brands have also been announced waves of price adjustments, or worse, discontinuation.

And while Valve hasn’t upped the price of its massively popular Steam Deck handheld, the device has suffered from stock outages – even on the in-production OLED models; Valve soon confirmed that memory and storage shortages are the reason why. So, if you’re in the market for a new PC handheld, the Xbox Ally series seems like a sensible choice at the moment.
