With the announcement of the RTX 50 series, there might not be a reason to buy the flagship RTX 4090 anymore. That’s thanks to some bold performance claims from Nvidia that the upcoming 5070 offers 4090-level performance, albeit with plenty of help from its new DLSS 4 tech with multi-frame generation by the looks of it.
Finding an RTX 4090 for a decent price these days is far from easy, especially as stock diminishes following its discontinuation late last year. Going for a second-hand option is often your best bet, and sites like eBay are obviously a great place for this – if you can find a reputable seller. Considering the 5070 performance for just $549, we might even see the 4090 crash in price from resellers as they react to the CES 2025 reveal.
Second-hand RTX 4090s might crash in price
We can’t say that we’ve seen eBay flooded with cheaper RTX 4090s, but there are some listings out there that caught our interest. Unfortunately, it’s hard to verify the validity of some sellers we’ve seen. In any case, we’re keen to see how this develops now there’s plenty of information about the performance of the RTX 50 series (as per Nvidia’s official performance charts). One such example is an ASUS ROG Strix going for $650, just over $100 more than the 5070 MSRP.
There are two big problems when it comes to buying from individual sellers. One being the aforementioned trust factor; the other being the condition of the hardware. However, if you do end up finding a good deal from a trustworthy seller with high reputation on the seller, an RTX 4090 around the $650 mark would be a steal in our opinion. This is especially true when you consider that most new 4090s will cost you well above $1,000.
