Hype is building up for the launch of the RTX 50 series, and while we anticipate the release of Nvidia’s next-gen graphics cards, there’s another aspect of that to think about – gaming laptops. The upcoming flagship RTX 5090 and the 5080 have already been the subject of leaks online, but that’s for the desktop models.
Most recently, RTX 5090 and 5080 prebuilt gaming PCs were spotted online in early retailer listings, and now the same is happening for laptops. ASUS ROG laptops in particular have shown up on a couple of storefronts, though likely as a placeholder for now. In any case, there is a lot to learn about how specs have been cut down for the laptop form factor.
RTX 50 series laptops are starting to show up online
It looks like ASUS is working on a few different laptops under its gaming brand, ROG. A couple of barebones listings that have appeared online include upcoming models such as the G16 and SCAR 18. One particular SKU that stands out is the ROG Strix G835, featuring up to the Core Ultra 9 275HX, 64GB DDR5 RAM, and the RTX 5090 according to VideoCardz.
Multiple models spotted online early don’t actually specify the GPU by name, but do use internal codenames (indicated in bold) which are referenced in the table down below.
- ROG Strix SCAR 18 – 18″ FHD, Ultra 9, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD, GN22-X11 (RTX 5090 16GB GDDR7)
- ROG Strix SCAR 18 – 18″ FHD, Ultra 9, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD, GN22-X9 (RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7)
- ROG Strix G16 – 16″ WQXGA (2560 x 1600), Ultra 9, 16GB DDR5, GN22-X7 (RTX 5070 Ti 12GB GDDR7)
As per usual, we cannot confirm that these specs are finalized just yet, so take these details with a pinch of salt for now.
RTX 5090 laptop GPU expected to feature 16GB, 5070 with just 8GB
It’s normal to see the laptop variants of GPUs cut down to size. For example, the RTX 4090 laptop GPU drops down from 24GB to 16GB VRAM and places itself closer to the desktop RTX 4080 in terms of performance, or just below according to these benchmarks. We also saw the 12GB 4070 cut down to 8GB in its laptop variant, and the same looks to be the case this generation.
According to leaked specs for upcoming ASUS ROG laptops posted by X, there will be gaming laptops available featuring the 5090 down to the 5050 – it is not yet apparent when these will be released, but it is likely that the 50 series will be revealed at CES 2025. As we can see from the table below (which also mentions the G835), the 5070 Ti laptop will likely feature 12GB of VRAM; anything below is relegated to just 8GB.
