The reveal of the RTX 50 series has finally arrived, with Jensen taking to the stage to announce four new GPUs, from the flagship RTX 5090 down to the RTX 5070. Every time Nvidia launches a new series of graphics cards, something we’ve come to pay close attention to – or even fear – are the card dimensions. This is especially true for the flagship, we all remember just how ridiculously big the 4090 seemed when we first saw it.
There’s some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that the 5090 is just as big. However, it has been slimmed down and the Founders Edition now actually qualifies for Nvidia’s SFF (small form factor)-ready program, unlike the RTX 4090.
Founders Edition is the only small form factor model for RTX 5090 (so far)
Before we get into any further details, let’s compare the size difference of the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090. Keep in mind these are for the Founders Edition models; custom AIBs from 3rd-party manufacturers will almost certainly differ in size.
Dimension (Founders Edition) | RTX 5090 | RTX 4090 |
---|---|---|
Length | 304 mm | 304 mm |
Width | 137 mm | 137 mm |
Slots | 2-slot (40 mm) | 3-slot (61 mm) |
Thanks to slimming the 5090 down to a 2-slot card, this allows it to make an appearing on Nvidia’s SFF GPU list here. It comes in the very same size as the RTX 5080, though no other board partners are included just yet for the 5090. For comparison, the RTX 5070 Founders Edition also uses a 2-slot design, albeit with a smaller 242 x 112 mm profile.
Thanks to the updated list, we can now see a populated list of manfacturer’s card for the small form factor, which are listed as follows, many of them with OC editions too. Here’s a list of board partners making the SFF list:
- ASUS
- Colorful
- Gainward
- Galax
- Gigabyte
- Inno3D
- MSI
- Palit
- PNY
- Zotac
The new 50 series cards will be available to buy soon starting with the 5090 and 5080 on January 30th, closely followed by the 5070 and 5070 Ti in February.
