Nvidia recently launched two RTX 50 series cards that were announced during CES 2025 – the RTX 5080 and 5090. Both cards were sold out within minutes across popular retailers, but this was already expected as previous reports suggested an “extremely limited supply” at launch. And it seems like due to low stock issues, people are switching to a high-end option from AMD instead.

The 50 series has been described as a “paper launch” so far, with very little stock to go around. This is of course beneficial to AMD, as consumers instead turn their attention to Nvidia’s biggest rival in the GPU department.

RX 7900 XTX is going out of stock quickly

With the RTX 5080 and 5090 currently difficult to get, people are looking for alternatives. One of the most popular choices right now is AMD's RX 7900 XTX. This card, which came out in December 2022, is still one of AMD’s best and can handle demanding tasks like 4K gaming without breaking a sweat. It's a powerful GPU with 24GB of VRAM, and it seems as if many gamers are now turning to it since they can't get their hands on the two Nvidia cards.

If you've been thinking about buying the 7900 XTX, you should act fast, as it's already starting to run out of stock on retailers like Amazon, Newegg, and Best Buy. Some variants are still available, but only a few, so it's clear that people are jumping on the chance to buy the AMD card before it sells out too. And once that happens, we can expect its price to increase due to high demand.

7900 XTX out of stock on Newegg

People are most likely switching to the 7900 XTX because it offers performance vaguely similar to the RTX 5080. On top of that, both cards have the same MSRP of $999. But with the RX 7900 XTX, you're getting more VRAM and a slightly lower TDP.

However, it is important to keep in mind that it will likely be difficult to find the RTX 5080 at its MSRP for at least a few months. On top of that, third-party models launched with a higher price tag, and they’re currently listed at way above their original prices on platforms like eBay. So, at the moment, getting the 7900 XTX makes more sense, but the card will also soon become extremely difficult to get. On top of that, AMD’s upcoming RX 9070 series isn’t expected to offer quite the same level of performance.
