RX 9070 GRE reviews arrive, revealing similar performance to RTX 5070

AMD’s next 12GB GPU, the Radeon RX 9070 GRE, is set to launch tomorrow (May 8), and as we already know, unlike the RX 9070 and its XT counterpart which were released in March, the Great Radeon Edition will be a China-exclusive SKU, much like the RX 7900 GRE. This means that unless AMD changes its plans to launch the RX 9070 GRE globally, the GPU will not be available in any region outside of China.
That said, with just hours left until launch, the review embargo for the GPU has been lifted, and most of the Chinese reviews suggest that the RX 9070 GRE will offer performance similar, not better, but similar to the RX 7900 GRE and RTX 5070. This is a bit surprising, especially since the GPU’s game benchmarks on the official AMD website claimed a 6% performance increase over the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p resolution.
Faster than the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB
According to performance reviews, the RX 9070 GRE essentially matches the RX 7900 GRE and RTX 5070, with similarity scores of 100.8% and 95.5%, respectively. There isn't much of a performance gap between the RX 9070 GRE and the RTX 5070 to fuss over, as reviews mention only a “single-digit FPS” difference. Even with ray tracing enabled, AMD's card holds its ground against the RTX 5070 in titles like Assassin's Creed: Shadows and F1 24.
However, the 9070 GRE is noticeably faster than the recently launched RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, with reviews showing an average lead of up to 27.6% in AAA titles like Far Cry 6 and F1 24. But once again, pricing becomes a factor, as the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is priced at 3,599 RMB, approximately 14% less than the RX 9070 GRE’s 4,199 RMB price.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE Reviews (China exclusive):
In general game tests, although there is some difference in specific frame rates, it should be considered that the performance of RX 9070 GRE in many games is at the same level as RTX 5070; compared with RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, RX 9070 GRE can be said to be a complete victory, with a leading advantage of up to 24%! In “Far Cry 6” and “F1 24”, the difference between RX 9070 GRE and RTX 5070 is only a single-digit fps. There is really no need to be so fussy, and the actual experience is the same. The ray tracing test results of RX 9070 GRE are a surprising part for us. Except for “Cyberpunk 2077”, a regular GeForce advantage project, Radeon is on par with RTX 5070 in “Assassin's Creed: Shadow” and “F1 24”, which is almost unseen before and is rare.

Overall, the card offers solid performance, but it isn’t enough to convince reviewers in terms of price-to-performance. Unlike the global RX 9070 variants, which were priced more aggressively, AMD doesn’t seem to be putting much pressure on the competition this time. That said, judging by these performance reviews, the RX 9070 GRE could fill the gap between the RTX 5070 and the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, and it might attract attention if it launched globally at a lower price, similar to the RX 7900 GRE.
