The new flagship Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition processor was released to the world earlier this week, shipping with an MSRP of $899 in the US and £799 in the UK. Some pre-orders actually started appearing ahead of the April 22 launch day, notably with an even higher price tag. It looks like Amazon is taking that to its advantage by advertising a “deal” on the new Ryzen 9 chip.

Over on Amazon in the US, the 9950X3D2 is listed with a 10% discount – sold and shipped directly by Amazon. That obviously sounds great for a brand-new piece of flagship hardware, until you realize that it’s only being discounted back down to its usual launch price. On top of that, the desktop CPU is the same price at rival retailers (and technically 99¢ cheaper if you really care).

If you’re looking for where to buy the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition chip, then Amazon is probably the first stop for many consumers. We would have advised against buying from Amazon given the inflated launch price, but that has thankfully been resolved. Plus, the 9950X3D2 is eligible for Amazon Prime, so you can enjoy a swift delivery.

This “deal” is present on both the US and UK storefronts. All we’re saying is that don’t be fooled by what looks like a discount, because it’s really not. Nevertheless, the new Dual Edition model should be reserved for users seeking the best of the best. It’s notably $200 more expensive than the 9950X3D that came before it, making it one of AMD’s most expensive consumer CPUs ever, all the while being met with mixed reactions during its limited pre-launch review coverage – largely due to the price.

The clue’s in the name, because the main selling point of the 9950X3D2 is its ‘Dual Edition’ design that makes it the world’s first desktop CPU with dual 3D V-Cache. This brings the 16-core, 32-thread chip all the way up to 192MB of L3 Cache (a notable uplift compared to the 9950X3D’s 128MB). The extra cache helps boost performance in productivity workflows, while gaming performance is largely similar – you’re better off buying the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or 9850X3D if you just need a gaming chip.
