The latest Stable version of the Steam Deck Client is here, and with it comes support for Valve’s newly released Steam Controller. The second-gen gamepad was released on May 4 and quickly sold out, well within its opening hour. It arrives ahead of the two other pieces of hardware Valve is releasing this year, the Steam Machine and Steam Frame.

If you’re reading this, there’s a pretty good chance that you don’t even own the Steam Controller yet, given the lack of stock to go around. In a rare post to social media, Valve confirmed that it is already working on restocking the device, noting that it ‘hates’ the fact that not everyone who wanted the controller was able to get their hands on one.

Patch notes for the latest Steam Deck Client update

We have just shipped an updated Steam Deck Client to the Stable channel.

General

• Steam Controller Support
• Added popup message when a controller connects or disconnects.
• Added setting to enable or disable controller battery notifications.
• Improved the Add A Controller user interface
• Reordered the items in the power button chord menu so it’s harder to accidentally put your device to sleep.
• Fixed the header networks status icon being larger than intended
• Fixed locked achievement sorting listing rarer achievements before less rare.

It’s a small patch (especially compared to the previous, big Steam Deck update that arrived last week, also on the Stable channel). For those unaware, the Stable channel refers to the full release version of the handheld’s client. Those who want more bleeding-edge versions will have to opt in to Beta or Preview versions. Although it’s easy to switch between them in your device’s settings, we imagine most people stick to the default Stable channel.

Valve’s second-generation Steam Controller is ideal for anyone couch gaming on a big screen with their Steam Deck in docked mode. You get to enjoy a familiar control scheme that mimics the Deck. By essentially shrinking the Deck’s design down to a gamepad, Valve says support is “not starting from zero,” thanks to all the user controller configs already out there that seamlessly translate from the Steam Deck to the Steam Controller.
