We have to admit that the latest Steam Frame-related leak isn’t as reliable as what we’ve seen in the past, but everything Valve is doing right now seems to be building towards a Steam Frame launch. Previous predictions had placed the launch on September 14th, so we’re not too far away from finding out, and a new price leak points towards a four-figure price tag in the United States.

A VR developer suggests the Steam Frame could end up costing around $1,150 USD, based on a ‘suspicious’ university grant awarded to them recently. In a Reddit post, they claim that the grant could potentially be for the much-anticipated headset. It seems we’re growing closer to launch day, especially as Valve released Steam VR 2.17 yesterday with many QoL improvements.

How much can we expect the Steam Frame to cost?

A user named DisagreementItWillBe on Reddit claims they “got an award/grant” of $1,245.58 and is a “known VR developer” at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The user clarifies that they “go to school at UNLV for Biochemistry” and suggests the grant could be for medical XR research on the Steam Frame, as a cheaper alternative to something like the Apple Vision Pro.

Based on the grant, the Steam Frame could cost ~$1149.50 before Nevada taxes. The post has since been removed as users questioned its legitimacy, so it’s safe to say you should take this information with more than a grain of salt. Either way, considering previous claims that the Steam Frame might cost significantly more than the Valve Index, a four-figure price within this bracket doesn’t seem too far-fetched. For reference, the Valve Index VR kit launched at $999.

Between the SteamVR 2.17 major update and Valve’s ‘Great on Frame’ section growing to more than 100 compatible games, it really feels like we’re incredibly close to a launch. We’ll be keeping an eye out for any official announcements from Valve in the coming days, and we recommend you do too. While this price leak isn’t quite as concrete as we had hoped, it is yet another clue.
