Steam Machine faceplate software goes open source, JSAUX asks modders to “show us what you cook”
Table of Contents
Popular handheld (and now Steam Machine) accessory brand JSAUX has made both of its Steam Machine faceplate apps available as open-source projects on GitHub, allowing users to freely access and modify the software. Both faceplates feature a display, available in Pixel Matrix and E-Ink variants, and there’s an app for each, with both repositories now open for developers and enthusiasts to tinker with. At the time of writing, both variants of the software are the official 1.2 version.
Based on a recent post on its Discord server, JSAUX is openly encouraging developers to fork the projects and create their own custom themes, widgets, layouts, and other features. Community contributions are more than welcome, as fan-made mods will help shape the two apps’ future development. Modders have access to rendering, UI, and more to play around with.

Despite the public release, you can also still download a stable version of the software via JSAUX’s website, where you can check out an installation guide. Installing the software actually requires Deck Loader (a popular piece of SteamOS software originating from the Steam Deck) in Desktop Mode.

Just last week, JSAUX was forced to apologize to its customers after a design flaw was discovered in the Pixel Matrix model. The company went on to update its official software and offer free replacements to those affected. Simply put, there was an issue with excessive wear on the faceplate’s built-in storage due to constant screen redraw updates. With the official fixes, along with the open-source release, we can only expect the Pixel and E-Ink apps to improve in the coming weeks and months.
