Valve announced the Steam Machine as part of a triple-header hardware reveal, alongside the Steam Frame VR headset and a second-generation Steam Controller. Needless to say (because it would be all over the internet already), Valve still hasn’t announced Half-Life 3, and it probably remains the most-anticipated PC game of all time, at least for those who haven’t given up on it. Now, rumor has it that the long-awaited end to the trilogy will be released at the same time as the Steam Machine.

Assuming this rumor is true, Half-Life 3 is set to arrive early in 2026. It has been pretty easy to brush off HL3 or Episode 3 leaks over the years, however, rumors have been ramping up lately, especially in the build up to The Game Awards last week. We never got an announcement from Valve there, to many people’s disappointment. But now we have something new to cling onto.

When does Half-Life 3 come out with Steam Machine?

According its store page, Steam Machine is set for launch “in early 2026,” though no exact date has been given yet. The issue of RAM price hikes is also expected to cause havoc, with one leaker claiming Valve might have to release a “bare bones” model in order to meet demand. In any case, the latest rumor comes from Insider Gaming’s weekly podcast.

“I have been told a date. I wasn’t going to report that date because they weren’t 100% confident in that date. That date has sailed past. So, there’s a reason I didn’t report it. Every date from every journalist I’ve spoken with, every creator who follows it and has dug, every single date that they were told has passed […] Everything I have, everybody I’ve talked to, are still adamant that this is a game that will be a launch title with the Steam Machine”.

Mike Straw, Insider Gaming Weekly podcast

Regarding the Steam Machine, Mike goes on to say that “there is a concern, however, that they haven’t made a decision on price,” and this is largely due to the massive spike in RAM prices. This, in turn, is said to be holding back the announcement of Half-Life 3. “It’s just when, and not if, at this point,” Mike adds. In short, you might be able to blame Half-Life 3’s delay on RAM prices, which come as a result of massive demand from AI firms ramping up data center production.

Steam Machine is easily the most popular of Valve’s new hardware, and its price has been a big point of contention. Lukewarm reaction to the news that it will be priced like a PC, not a console (in other words, not ‘subsidized’ and sold at a loss) may be something else Valve is considering before it makes its final decision.

You always have to take ‘Valve time’ into account, as the company seldom rushes its launches. However, with “early 2026” officially announced for the Steam Machine, and the assumption that Half-Life 3 is complete, it seems that we’re incredibly close.
