Subnautica 2 was first announced back in April 2022, and fans of the survival genre have been eagerly waiting to dive back into the franchise. The original Subnautica was a massive success, becoming extremely popular thanks to its mix of underwater exploration, crafting, survival mechanics, and terrifying sea creatures – a spin-off, Below Zero, has been out since 2021.
The upcoming game promises to expand the formula with new gameplay systems, improved visuals, larger environments, and even co-op multiplayer support. The original game was strictly single-player, though fan-made mods gave players a taste of a multiplayer experience. When does Subnautica 2 release in your region?
According to the developers, Unknown Worlds, Subnautica 2 will launch into Early Access today, on May 14, at 8 AM PT. More good news is the fact that the game is playable on handhelds. The devs recently said it was “good to go” on the Steam Deck and ROG Xbox Ally, and Subnautica 2 has since been verified by Valve for its popular gaming handheld. You may have also heard recently that the game was leaked online ahead of launch, which was quickly condemned by the developers.
What does the game offer?
Subnautica 2 takes players to an entirely new alien planet filled with dangerous creatures, mysterious ruins, and deep underwater secrets waiting to be uncovered. This time, the story begins after your character is forced to leave home because of an ongoing conflict. Things quickly go wrong after arriving on the new world, leaving you stranded and fighting for survival.
The game will once again focus heavily on survival mechanics. Players will need to gather materials, craft equipment, build underwater bases, and upgrade vehicles in order to survive deeper and more dangerous parts of the ocean. A new submersible called the Tadpole will help players travel across the alien world and explore vibrant underwater biomes.
One of the biggest additions in Subnautica 2 is optional online co-op multiplayer. While the game can still be played solo like previous entries, players will now also be able to team up with up to three friends. Together, players can explore the ocean, search for resources, and uncover the mysteries hidden beneath the surface.
It’s also important to note that the game is launching in Early Access. That means players may encounter bugs, unfinished systems, and performance issues at launch. However, the developers plan to continue expanding the game over time with new creatures, tools, story content, vehicles, and biomes.
