For some time now, there has been speculation that Nvidia is working on a new RTX 4070 model that will feature GDDR6 memory instead of GDDR6X – which is a downgrade. This is due to the quality issue that was reported a while ago, which was said to affect RTX 4070 and higher cards.
In fact, earlier this week, we reported that GALAX was planning to introduce an RTX 4070 OC 2X graphics card with GDDR6 memory very soon. The leak also included some photos of the upcoming AD104-251 GPU model, which added to its credibility. And now, this updated version of RTX 4070 GPU will be released sometime after August 20th, sooner than we expected.
The new RTX 4070 with GDDR6 is likely to be released next month
According to the report on Board Channels, the new RTX 4070 variants are expected to arrive after August 20th. The RTX 4070 series is currently facing a supply shortage, which is expected to go on until the 20th. Then, the new variants with GDDR6 will be rolled out around the same time and will ease the supply issues.
As per our earlier report, aside from the memory type, the new RTX 4070 variant will have the exact same specs – 5,888 CUDA cores and 12GB of VRAM. Plus, judging from the images we saw in the previous report, the new variant uses an 8-pin power connector and a dual-fan and slot design – just like the original one.
However, considering that it uses the slower GDDR6 VRAM, the performance may take a slight dip. Further, it is likely that the TDP will remain the same, but we don’t have an exact number for this yet.
In any case, this new information from Board Channels does double down on the speculation that Nvidia is rolling out RTX 4070 with downgraded memory. At the moment, there are no details available about the price. Further, it is not yet confirmed whether Nvidia will introduce or officially launch the new RTX 4070 variant or quietly put it on the shelves, we expect the latter.
