As a hobby, gaming is not always cheap. AAA games are often expensive, and that's not even getting into the cost of maintaining your gaming rig. As a result, free-to-play titles on Steam can offer a bit of low-cost entertainment. You might even uncover a hidden gem, or at least your new favorite guilty pleasure.

With that in mind, we bring you the newest and freest Steam games available this week – all of which can be acquired without a subscription.

Best free Steam games this week

Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium

Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium is a turn-based strategy RPG that combines that genre with the ever-popular gacha mechanic. This title, developed by Chinese developer MICA Team has the player take command of squads of androids who look like anime girls, referred to in-universe as ‘T-Dolls'.

Those familiar with other strategy titles such as X-Com will find the gameplay loop very comfortable as you utilise various firearms and melee weapons against waves of enemies, along with capturing strategic locations or conducting rescue and evacuation operations.

Alpha League HD

Fans of auto-battling games might be interested in Alpha League HD. In contrast to most titles in the genre, instead of managing an entire team players instead select a hero and set them up with 12 different ‘combat genres'. These heroes are then set loose to fight amongst a variety of maps, fighting against bots before testing themselves against fellow players.

No Throwing

This is a bit of a strange one. In No Throwing you take on the role of a tiny robot hitting items as they fall from the sky in order to protect a coop of chickens. It feels like a throwback to some classic 8-bit games of the 80s.

Sacred of Gates: Tinder

The peculiar title aside, Sacred of Gates: Tinder is an RPG set in a land inspired by Norse legends. The store page boasts about its inspiring vistas, legendary monsters, and ability to customise your character, though gameplay details are scarce.

Let's Play Jigsaw Puzzles

If you love jigsaws but don't have room for a massive 5000-piece puzzle in your house, then Let's Play Jigsaw Puzzles might be the answer.

Crazlipse

A police officer uncovers a zombie apocalypse and is forced to fight against the zombie hordes. Yes, Crazlipse is a zombie shooter game. This time from Yan Massoni Game Studio.

Hidden Arcade: Hundreds of Ghosts

This is a hidden object game, but it has some pretty impressive art and aesthetics inspired by 80s arcades. Players need to hunt down ghosts as they travel through various worlds in this title from indie developers Lemon Pohl and Leonie Droege.
