Quirky Baldur’s Gate 3 mod turns any NPC into the main character
Table of Contents
The world of Baldur’s Gate 3 is packed with exciting bosses, NPCs, dragons, and so many characters that you often think, why can’t I play as one of those guys? Well, now you can, thanks to a mod that lets you fight your opponents by becoming the opponent yourself. The mod, called Transmogs and Spelltheft, gives players the ability to transform into any NPC (or animal) they want and cast spells they could only dream of using before.
Created by GabeCamomescro, the mod is available for download on mod.io, with over 8,000 players already enjoying it. The official mod page is packed with details, and we highly recommend checking it out, as this mod offers far more than just character transformations.

Play Baldur’s Gate 3 like a true Doppelganger
Essentially, the Transmogs and Spelltheft mod allows you to transform into any nearby character and gain their passives, resistances, and legendary actions. However, you do not get their health, items, or ability scores, and according to the creator, legendary abilities are not guaranteed for every NPC you turn into. The mod works through a special ring that enables multiple functions, including Steal Identity, Spell Theft, Weapon Reforging, and more. While most of these are self-explanatory, the creator has given a full breakdown of their mechanics for those who want more details.
One interesting thing to note is that transforming into a story NPC might affect your game. Though the creator hasn’t tested this yet, a YouTuber using the mod encountered a different dialogue than usual. At the start of the game, when interacting with the Mind Flayer, it typically says, “You, thrall!” However, because this is an Intellect Devourer, the Mind Flayer recognizes it is not talking to a thrall and instead instructs the player to find a thrall.
Try out the mod before Patch 8 goes live
With the massive Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7 update that arrived back in September last year, bringing official modding support for everyone, the BG3 modding community continues to provide fun ways to make each playthrough feel fresh. However, Patch 8, which will be the last major update for the game, is arriving soon. With big updates, mods often break or stop functioning correctly, especially if the developers change a mechanic or feature that directly impacts a mod's functionality. In many cases, mod makers need to release updates to restore compatibility, but this isn't always guaranteed.
That said, the exact release time for Patch 8 hasn't been announced yet, and we won't know which mods will be affected until it arrives. Till then, you can keep enjoying the game and playing Baldur’s Gate 3 like a Ditto from Pokémon, shifting into whatever character you want. The next big mod to look forward to is Path To Menzoberranzan, which recently announced voice acting auditions on the way if you’re interested in getting involved.
