Ubisoft joins Xbox Disc to Digital program as users report support for Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and more franchises

Xbox owners wasted no time putting Microsoft’s new Disc-to-Digital scheme to the test when it was introduced at the end of August. The program allows fans to convert their physical discs into digital game licenses, and gamers quickly discovered it even works on games delisted from the digital store. However, it didn’t take long to realize that it doesn’t work with every single game.

Massive publishers such as Ubisoft and Square Enix seemingly opted out of supporting the feature at launch, with customers simply met with a ‘Digital license unavailable’ message when trying to convert their physical discs. However, in a turn of events, new reports reveal that Ubisoft game support has gone live – users report success with Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and more.

Ubisoft games are reportedly working with Disc to Digital

No publisher has explicitly confirmed it is backing away from the program, so it may just be a case of a slow rollout. Users have also reported a lack of support for Sega and Bandai Namco titles, so we can only hope to see support arrive in the near future, whether it’s officially announced or not. The service is currently available for Xbox Insiders, but a public release is expected soon.

All it takes is for Xbox Insiders to insert a compatible disc into their Xbox One or Xbox Series X console (the Xbox Series S is digital-only, without a disc tray) to be given the option to convert their game into a digital copy and save it on their system. It’s important to note that the digital license is still linked to the disc, so if you sell the disc, the new owner can claim it from you. In other words, don’t bother digitalizing all your physical media just to sell them off to make a quick buck.

It’s possible that while the program is limited to Xbox Insiders, Microsoft has not yet offered or rolled out support to all publishers, especially if it conflicts with a legal matter out of our knowledge. Out of the four major publishers we’ve listed so far, Ubisoft is the only one we’ve seen users report on, but we may soon see the others follow in time for the pending public release.
